Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 and 400d launched, priced Rs 88.80 lakhs
The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE was launched in January this year, and the German luxury brand has now introduced two additional models to India’s SUV line-up. The price of the Mercedes – Benz GLE 450 petrol is Rs 88.80 lakh, while the locally built GLE 400d is Rs 89.90 lakh. In India, the GLE collection currently includes the GLE 300d (Rs 73.70 lakh), GLE 450 (Rs 88.80 lakh), GLE 400d (Rs 89.90 lakh) and GLE 400d Hip Hop Version (Rs 1.25 crore).
Well, the most significant distinction is the price-the GLE 400d is more economical than the Hip Hop Version, a whopping Rs 36 lakh. Much of this price disparity is because the GLE 400d Hip Hop is a CBU import while the 400d version is a product built locally.
A little of the difference in price also derives from the kit standard on sale. The Hip Hop Version offers features such as Merc’s E-Active Body Control suspension, a 13-speaker, 590W Burmester sound system, a head-up display, and nine airbags, while the GLE 400d comes with 7 airbags.
They do also share the multi-beam LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable rear seats, front seat memory kit, four-zone climate control, the new MBUX applications for double 12.3-inch screens (for infotainment and instrumentation), adaptive air suspension, panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging. Also provided are safety kits such as a 360-degree parking camera with hands-free parking feature, blind-spot tracking, and active brake assist. With the introduction of the W223 S-Class, Mercedes-Benz will take a radically new route for the interiors.
Both are powered by the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine churning out a torque of 330hp and 700Nm. As with Mercedes‘ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, a 9-speed automatic is standard.
It was a Diesel-only platform when the GLE first arrived in India. Purchasers also have the choice of selecting the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, powered by a 367hp/500Nm, 3.0-liter, six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid feature that can add up to 22hp and 250Nm of torque when needed. All the production is sent via a 9-speed automatic to all four wheels. Mercedes reports a 5.7sec time of 0–100kph.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 and the GLE 400d share the same comfort of tools, safety set, and bug. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 compares in the Indian market with the BMW X5 (Rs 82.90-84.40 lakh), which is available in petrol and diesel engine variants. Many rivals include Land Rovers, now petrol-only, such as the Range Rover Sport (Rs 87.02 lakh-Rs 1.01 crore) and the Discovery (Rs 75.59-87.99 lakh), along with the Volvo XC90 (Rs 80.90 lakh-Rs 1.31 crore), which comes in petrol-electric and diesel variants.
