2024 Lexus LBX Compact SUV Unveiled

Today marks the formal launch of the all-new LBX, the company’s smallest SUV and the only one with a hybrid drivetrain. The car is essentially Lexus’ response to the Toyota Yaris Cross and will go on sale in Europe, the UK, and a few other international markets in early 2024.Lexus Breakthrough Crossover is what the initials LBX stand for, signifying that this vehicle would be very significant for Europe, where it was developed.

Lexus refers to the LBX as a small SUV even though it is unmistakably a subcompact SUV (B-SUV) that competes with the DS 3. To be more precise, the LBX measures 4,190mm in length, 1,825mm in width, 1,545mm in height, and 2,580mm in wheelbase, making it 305mm shorter than the Lexus UX and progressively longer than a Toyota Yaris Cross.

It is crucial to remember that the 2024 Lexus LBX Compact SUV is based on the GA-B architecture that has been “fundamentally adjusted to meet Lexus requirements” and is only offered with a self-charging hybrid engine. The 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine is also utilized, together with two (for FWD) or three (for E-Four AWD) electric motors, an electronic CVT, and a NiMH battery pack.

There are 134 horsepower and 185 Nm of total output. It’s interesting to note that this has 20 horsepower and 65 Nm more torque than the Toyota Yaris Cross. According to Lexus, it takes 9.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The FWD models use a torsion beam rear axle, while the AWD vehicles get a more modern double-wishbone arrangement.

The design departs from the Lexus stylistic language’s traditional expression. The front’s spindle grille has been replaced with a central intake that is less complicated and has a honeycomb pattern that blends in with the bodywork. The forceful LED headlamps on the short bonnet are connected by a thin trim piece, and the lower bumper intakes add to the car’s dynamic image.

The wheel arches of the profile have premium finishes and subtle plastic cladding, and the glossy black trim piece on the C-pillar gives the greenhouse the appearance of being enlarged. The focus point at the back is the full LED taillights with sunglasses-inspired motifs that highlight the toned-up rear shoulders.

There is also a rear spoiler, chrome accents encircling the faux bumper outlets, and no exhaust pipe. Lexus paid close attention to the personalization options. Customers have a choice between the base LBX, the elegant and relaxed Elegant / Relax (monotone exterior, glossy 18-inch wheels), and the sporty Emotion / Cool (bi-tone exterior, machined 18-inch wheels). Each of these vehicles has a different interior upholstery layout.

Regarding the interior, the Lexus appears more upscale and technologically advanced than the Toyota, which is more mechanically focused, thanks to features like the inclined center console, ambient lighting, and the choice of luxury upholstery materials like semi-aniline leather, Ultrasuede, or vegan-friendly alternatives. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a 9.8-inch touchscreen are all part of the Lexux Link Connect infotainment system, which enables wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity.

The level of safety equipment in this sector is rather high thanks to the integrated Lexus Safety System + ADAS suite. The Mark Levinson audio system has 13 speakers total, including an optional subwoofer. Lexus is also pleased with the NVH levels of the Lexus LBX, which has significantly better insulation. The load capacity of the AWD version is a little less than the 332-liter capacity of the FWD version because of the additional hardware on the rear axle.

Beginning with initial sales in early 2024, the Lexus LBX will begin manufacturing in late 2023, with a focus on European markets. Right-hand-drive LBXs are expected to start arriving in March 2024, and Lexus will start taking orders in the UK in July. Australia is another country that has a good chance of becoming one of the “selected global markets” for Lexus LBX, but the company says the decision “will be made at a later stage.”
