Hyundai N Vision 74 Concept Wraps Off
At the Busan Motor Show 2022 in Korea, Hyundai unveiled its brand-new Hyundai N Vision 74 retro-styled sports car concept. This idea blends Hyundai’s upcoming technology as well as its rich design heritage.
Instead of using batteries, the Hyundai N Vision 74 examines hydrogen fuel cell technology and sheds insight on a lesser-known period in Hyundai’s history. Design director SangYup Lee recalled how a fortunate confluence of initiatives led to the conception of the idea. The engineering team intended to cover the engineering prototype in an eye-catching body in order to test a high-performance hydrogen powertrain. This turned out to be the ideal chance to carry out long-dormant intentions for a tribute to the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupé.
Two electric motors positioned at the back of the N Vision 74 provide a total of just over 679 horsepower. A 95kW hydrogen fuel cell can be used to charge a 62.4kWh battery while it is in use to power these. With a total range of more than 595km, the big battery can be quickly charged like in any BEV and the 4.2-kilogram hydrogen tank can be filled in just five minutes.
The car can actively torque-vector thanks to the two motors. The idea also considers methods for cooling the mechanical components, with distinct coolant channels for the battery, fuel cell, and motors all under the management of a single system.
The design pays tribute to the past while the mechanics look to the future. Giugiaro created the 1970 Pony, which served as Hyundai’s first custom vehicle. A sporty coupé version was ordered to boost the brand’s reputation at the time and debuted at the 1974 Turin car show. Hyundai, however, was unable to support its production at the time, therefore the project was shelved and the lone prototype was obliterated.
Technical drawings for the coupé from 1977 have suddenly reappeared, proving that the project actually continued longer than previously believed. Lee and his group chose to resurrect the design for the N Vision 74.
Despite not technically being an Ioniq vehicle, the concept has ties to both the existing and upcoming Ioniq EVs thanks to its design language. The normal 5-door Pony served as an inspiration for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, however, the N Vision 74 pushes the concept further. Both the front and the back of the light signature have pixel lights typical of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
Thus, the idea is in line with Hyundai’s goal of approaching its lineup more like chess pieces than Russian dolls, where each model plays a certain purpose in the system without necessarily appearing like the others. The Hyundai N Vision 74 in the opinion of the designers, is Hyundai’s monarch, halo vehicle, and a declaration that Hyundai’s future models won’t necessarily all be sedans or SUVs.
The brand-new Tucson will go on sale starting in a month, while Hyundai is getting ready to introduce the Ioniq 5 EV to the Indian market.
