2022 MG ZS EV To Launch On February
The launch of the 2022 MG ZS EV facelift is just around the corner, with a price announcement expected in February. Aside from the usual styling and feature updates that come with a facelift, there is a significant one under the skin.
The bigger news with the 2022 ZS EV is that it will get a bigger battery, and thus a longer range, rather than the usual facelift updates. The current model’s 44.5kWh battery was claimed to deliver 340km of range when it was released in 2020, but it was revised with a new range rating of 419km in 2021, as certified by a new testing agency.
We can now confirm that the 44.5kWh battery will be replaced by a new 51kWh unit in the 2022 ZS EV for India, and while no official range figure has been released, expect a claimed range of close to 480km.
With a larger battery and a longer range, the 2022 MG ZS EV should be able to put some distance between itself and the Tata Nexon EV, which is also getting a larger 40kWh battery and a longer range later this month.
The 2022 MG ZS EV was revealed globally last October, and as we noted at the time, the design now resembles its petrol counterpart, the MG Astor, but remains distinctive. In fact, the ICE and EV versions are now more visually distinct than before their respective facelifts.
The slim headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and LED tail-lamps are identical to those found on the Astor, as is the overall silhouette. The similarities, however, end there.
The EV’s front and rear bumpers are all new, with surprisingly sporty detailing, and new alloy wheel designs will be available. The most visible difference is the body-colored, blanked-off frontal section that replaces the traditional grille, though the charging port remains, albeit next to the MG badge rather than behind it.
The interior is unlikely to receive as extensive a makeover as the exterior, possibly consisting of only color and trim differences, but there will be some key features borrowed from the Astor.
These are likely to include a wireless phone charger, a digital instrument cluster, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen to replace the earlier discovered 8-inch unit. It remains to be seen whether the dashboard-mounted AI assistant and Level 2 Autonomous ADAS features from the petrol-powered Astor will be included, as they may increase costs.
With a facelift arriving just two years after the original and so soon after its global debut, MG’s commitment to EVs and bringing the latest models to India is clear. In addition, MG Motor India has begun the development of a mass-market electric SUV, which is expected to be released early next year.
Expect a price increase for the 2022 MG ZS EV that is greater than what is typically seen with a mid-life update. This is due to the fact that, aside from cosmetic and feature enhancements, as well as increased input costs with each new calendar year, an increase in battery size is one of the larger costs with an EV, which has a significant impact on the sticker price. Nonetheless, until Hyundai brings back an updated version of the Kona Electric, the ZS EV will have no direct competitors.
