2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 facelift unveiled

Mercedes-AMG revamped the hot E63 series with a number of improvements intended to provide drivers with increased convenience without losing performance.

The newest iteration of the performance-oriented architecture updates to the E-class changes is in line with the latest facelift that has been introduced globally but is yet to come into India. The revised E63 gets aggressive new styling features that aim to create a closer connection to the global sportscar portfolio of Mercedes-AMG. The refreshed styling also includes a larger grille and aerodynamic tweaks to enhance both engine grip and airflow.

The new E63 retains the 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo engine of the previous version which produces a torque of 603hp and 850Nm in the top-line S version. Power continues to be transferred to all four wheels via an automatic 9-speed gearbox.

Though the output is unchanged, Mercedes-AMG says there has been considerable tuning to widen the performance window of the E63. Work has also been done to refine the dampers and chassis whilst the dynamic engine mounts on the E63 S have been tweaked to adapt to driving conditions more quickly.

The AMG Dynamic Select software, which adjusts the drive programs, all-wheel-drive systems, and ESP stability control, has been further developed. The AMG Dynamics Plus kit, which includes a Race drive mode and Drifts feature, is standard on the E63 S and is first available as an option for the base model. The E63 sedan has a 3.5sec time of 0-100kph and the S version achieves that in 3.4sec.

The latest E63 sports an AMG-specific radiator grille with 12 vertical slats and an expanded Mercedes star logo, in an attempt to distinguish it further from the previously revised E-class lineup.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 has flatter LED headlights, and larger ‘power domes’ are sculpted into the bonnet, according to the manufacturer. To order to enhance durability and aerodynamics, the wheel arches were widened by 22mm to allow a larger groove on the front axle.

There are flatter brake lights at the rear and a reshaped apron which has also been improved aerodynamically. The aspect is completed with a silver trim strip in high-matte black – but the latter product is available in gloss black or carbon fiber, as part of various exterior bundles. There’s a new diffuser, as well. The base wheel size for the E63 remains at 19 inches while in most countries, the S variant will offer 20-inch alloy wheels as the base.

Inside, the E63 features similar tweaks to the rest of the facelifted E-class range, including the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system and digital instrument display, both of which offer AMG display options to suit your needs.

There is also a new AMG Output twin-speed steering wheel with haptic feedback controls, and it has a hands-on sensor that will prompt warnings and ultimately disable emergency brake assist if it detects that the driver does not have his hands on the wheel for an extended period of time. Mated to the new wheel are larger paddle shifters in aluminum which can operate the 9-speed transmission.

The outgoing E63 was offered in the top-spec S edition in India and we suspect that the facelifted model will also make it to our shores sometime after the launch of the mainstream revamped E-class sedan.

In addition to the third-gen GLS SUV, Mercedes recently launched the AMG C 63 Coupe and the updated AMG GT-R in India.
